What to do in Palavas-les-Flots? 10 ideas, in summer and out of season
Just 20 minutes from Montpellier, Palavas-les-Flots has kept the soul of a fishing village. We manage several properties here and spend a lot of time in the town: here are the ideas we share with our guests, from the beach to the lagoons.
1. Pick your beach
Fine sand and long beaches on both sides of the canal: Sarrail, Hôtel de Ville, Coquilles, Zénith or Saint-Pierre, several of them lifeguarded in season. Palavas holds the Famille Plus label, a guarantee of a welcome designed with children in mind.
2. Stroll along the canal
The canal divides the town in two: the left bank with its village lanes, the right bank with the harbour and the main beach. Make a detour to Saint-Pierre church, painted entirely blue inside, and to the Japanese-inspired Jardin Saint-Pierre.
3. Cross on the Transcanal
At 83 metres long, the Transcanal is billed as the shortest chairlift in the world. It links the two banks above the water all year round, and children love it. Bring some change.
4. Dine at the Phare de la Méditerranée
This former water tower is now home to a panoramic restaurant whose dining room slowly rotates. On a clear day, the 360° view stretches as far as Sète, Le Grau-du-Roi and the Cévennes. Ideal at sunset.
5. Cheer on the water jousting
From June to early September, jousters face off along the canal quays, lance and shield in hand, trying to knock their opponent into the water. It is a Languedoc tradition dating back to the 16th century, and the tournaments are free. In early July, the Saint-Pierre festival adds a procession, a blessing of the boats and fireworks.
6. Explore the Parc du Levant and its museums
Eighteen hectares of greenery, water and children's play areas around the Redoute de Ballestras, the town's oldest monument. Here you will find the Albert Dubout museum, dedicated to the famous cartoonist, and the Museum of Miniature Trains and Cars, with a locomotive from the old Montpellier-Palavas train and nearly 5,000 miniatures.
7. Watch the pink flamingos
Palavas is surrounded by lagoons: the Prévost, the Arnel and, towards Lattes, the Méjean nature site and its Maison de la Nature. Binoculars recommended: pink flamingos can often be seen there all year round.
8. Visit Maguelone Cathedral
A few kilometres away, on a former island surrounded by lagoons and vineyards, stands a fortified Romanesque cathedral from the 12th and 13th centuries. The place is magical in the late afternoon. Get there by car from Palavas, or by bike if you are feeling sporty.
9. Shop at the market and taste the catch of the day
Fresh fish sold on the quays in the morning, markets on Wednesday and Friday mornings, and on Sundays in summer. Everything you need for a seafood lunch on your terrace.
10. Come without a car
The Lez greenway links Palavas to Montpellier with 12 km of cycle path, away from traffic. By bus, line 631 runs to Montpellier, and the Transp'Or shuttle (line 1) drops you at the end of tram line 3, in Pérols.
And out of season?
Palavas does not go to sleep in winter: walks on an almost deserted beach, pink flamingos on the lagoons, fish lunches at the harbour, and the Parc du Levant museums and the Transcanal are still open. It is also the best time to enjoy the calm, at gentler prices. And for a day in the city, read our Montpellier guide.
