Suite 1: queen-size bed, air conditioning and bathroom with walk-in shower. Suite 2: double bed on a mezzanine and a single bed, with adjoining bathroom. Bedroom 3: a single bed set under a beautiful stone vault. Separate toilet.

The Écusson, historic Montpellier

The apartment stands in the former tanners' quarter, La Blanquerie. Legend has it that Catherine de' Medici used a secret passage to reach Saint-Pierre Cathedral. Yet the neighbourhood's fine wrought-iron gate dates from the 18th century, two hundred years after the queen: the real secret lies beneath the cobblestones, with the vaulted cellars and wells of medieval Montpellier. The cathedral, the lanes of the Écusson, restaurants and shops are all within walking distance.
